If you are dealing with a small clog that is close to the fixture, a hand drain snake can sometimes get the job done. Think simple bathroom sink or a kitchen sink where the blockage is not far out.

• Have the right equipment: a hand snake from a home center is a start, but it is limited.
• Understand the challenge: you are cranking and pushing at the same time, so leverage runs out fast. Hand snakes are tough to control and hard to drive very far.
• Set a time budget: ask yourself what eight hours of your day is worth. If you burn a Saturday and still have a clog, that is a high price for a maybe.

When a Snake Won’t Cut It

Our team often starts with a professional cable machine. It is stronger and can run much farther than a hand tool. Still, some situations demand more than a cable.

• Main line clogs beyond your reach: if we push a hundred feet and run out of cable without clearing the blockage, we need longer reach or different tech. That is where hydro jetting can help.
• Heavy grease buildup: we have pulled cables back caked in grease from four inch sewer lines that were nearly filled solid. You might poke a small hole, then it seals back up. A hydro jet uses high pressure water with multi-jet nozzles that spin and scour the pipe walls to break up and flush grease. If the grease has hardened like rock, we may need to excavate a section and repair it.
• Thick root intrusion: small roots can sometimes be cut, but one inch thick roots can trap or break a cable. In those cases we talk about spot repair or replacement of the affected section.

How To Know When To Stop

Forcing a cable can damage old or fragile piping, especially galvanized or cast iron with failing joints. Add years of drain chemicals and those pipes can be paper thin without you knowing. One more hard shove and suddenly you have a leak inside a wall or under a floor.

Red flags that mean stop and call:

• The cable stops at the same point every time
• You feel the tool binding or kinking
• You have old cast iron or galvanized drains
• You smell chemicals or have used drain cleaners recently
• You hear scraping that sounds like metal on metal
